How does NAVIT calculate CO₂-emissions?

Updated over a week ago

The CO₂ emissions are calculated in collaboration with our partner SQUAKE.

The following section provides a high-level overview of the methodology used for these calculations.

  • Transport modes with fees per km:
We calculate emissions based either on the merchant’s own sustainability report (e.g., some e-scooter providers report zero emissions if powered 100% by renewables; some ride-hailing services provide their own fleet-specific factors) or on average emissions per transportation mode.

  • Transport modes with fees per minute/hour (or other time unit):
We approximate the traveled distance using average speed per transportation mode and then apply the corresponding emission factor to estimate total emissions.

  • Petrol stations and similar cases:
We estimate emissions based on revenue and reported emissions, which allows us to approximate emissions per EUR spent.

  • No company-specific data available:
In such cases, we rely on factors from the Organization of Conscious Consumerism (OfCC / OfnK in German), which provides merchant category- and MCC-based emission factors by country.
